It was built there in the late 50s/early 60s for a high school student that had been paralyzed in a car accident. It was built as an antique shop, which the young man operated successfully for a few years. After that it was a John Deere dealership and, yes, a hay barn. It was built from scrap material and wood timbers from the old lock #5 on the Tombigbee River as it was dismantled. It's been expanded since its original construction a few times including expanding both sides.
